The Research paper

Go to the Purdue OWL and read through their links with regard to the research paper. Post your comment to this blog post.

  1. I feel I am writing more of an argumentative research paper because even though I am providing information, in the end I give my opinion and pick a side. I want to discuss why fans love the game of baseball and how they are affected by the occurrences that arise? Should fans support the game even though it is filled with gambling and scandals? I will provide reasons why fans love the game of baseball and what keeps them coming back for more I will also describe the fans that are affected by money in baseball. I will show the dark side of baseball and show what really occurs. Finally I will give my opinion and pick a side. I will share personal experiences as a fan and how I feel about the subject.
The audience that I am trying to target is the fans in baseball. I feel I have a very specific audience and I feel I can persuade my audience very well because I have personal experiences to back up my research paper. I feel that sports fans are going to be the people most interested in reading my research paper. I feel they will be interested because they can relate to my research paper.

  2. Sammy,

I am sports fan so I would definitely be tied into your audience and just by reading this post I am interested in reading your paper. Baseball is not my favorite sport out there, but this paper still seems interesting to read. After looking at your questions about what you are going to discuss, it seems like you will have a good arguing research paper and on the right track for this paper.

  3. After looking through the links on the OWL website, I am pretty sure that my research paper is going to be an argument research paper because I feel there are some points I will make that can be taking as persuasion and this topic can be debatable. My overall topic is Women’s issues, and I am narrowing it down to the differences between men and women CEOs. They are many inequalities between men and women CEOs. I hate to see that there are still differences between men and women till this day in the workforce and this concerns me because I will be a woman in the workforce one day, so as you can see I already have my opinions for this topic. I will be discussing and arguing about the differences in salaries for this occupation, and the constant thought that jobs should be given to men because of many different reasons like their better education, their status, and just overall more professional. To add on to that I chose to further argue why can’t women be in charge and why do people think they cannot be? I feel that women would bring an overall different view to many things then men would. Women’s style would be different, they would have a different tone, and they would take time to look at the bigger picture than what is right in front of them. For my audience, I think it will specifically gain attention from women and men in that occupation, but then also interest all men and women in the business world, who could relate to these ideas and problems.

  4. Lauren, I think your topic seems very interesting and I'm sure you will find a lot of great articles with different opinions. You could also make a point that there are many successful women leaders in our nation and how many of them are doing very well in a position of great authority. Some of them being political leaders and you could also research some influential women in important businesses.

  5. The Perdue OWL gave a lot of good points. I think that for my paper I am going to be going in the direction of argumentative. I have my idea on the topic and I am going to persuade the readers to see where I am coming from. I will include a small portion of the paper to the negative side of crash dieting, but the main point is to be for it. It has such a stigma for being a bad thing, but if you look outside of the box and see that if done in the right way it can be okay.

  6. @Sammy Testa

    Sammy,
Your paper sounds very interesting. I love baseball and would love to see the darker side versus what we all see on television. Baseball is something that all fans of baseball can talk about aside from what team you route for. I keep watching the game for the love of the game and my team. They are there to play a game that most Americans love.

  7. After taking a look at the article on the Purdue Owl website, I think I have a pretty good idea of where I am going with my paper. I think my paper is going to be more of an analytical paper. For my paper, I would like to take a closer look at how the media and technology play a part in crimes. I am hoping to take a look at people such as Casey Anthony and O.J. Simpson. Both became the center of attention when accused of committing murders. The media went crazy over both cases. The two seemed to become celebrities from all the publicity they received. The crimes they were accused of became glamorized by the media. I want to take a look at how the media affects everyone involved in a murder case, and also the people at home watching on TV. I would also like to take a look at how violent video games influence people and if they seem to have any relation in regards to people who become killers. My goal is to see what part technology and the media play in the crimes people commit.

  8. Lauren, I really like your ideas for your paper! I think your topic is great and it is very interesting to just about anyone. I do like how you still narrowed it down to a specific audience. I believe my audience will be made up of people who are interested in the topic of crime and punishment and also people who have watched these murder trials on TV or heard about them and are curious to learn more. I think you are on the right track and your paper sounds like it is going to be great!

  9. After reading the material on research papers from Purdue OWL, I predict that my paper will take the argumentative route. My new thesis statement is, “Education is something that promotes the common good,” and of course this idea can be challenged by other people’s opinions. I will support my thesis first with the progress made by the two commencement speakers, Dr. Lyte and Dr. Herr, and then I will connect the evidence of college alumni contributing to society. After piecing together multiple examples of community services, I will hopefully discover new and interesting insights on the topic to pose a strong closing statement on the issue.

  10. @Jackie O'Donnell

Jackie, I am curious about what your research findings will turn up. My position is that media not only glamorizes violence and crime, it also makes audiences desensitized towards criminology. Every time you turn on the news that is all you hear about because the media feeds on people’s consumption of gossip. Thus, I wonder if there is a correlation between technology/media and crimes as you propose.

  12. In my research paper I will write a argumentative paper that will have a stance in my thesis. I tried to pick a topic that will allow me to have a strong opinion in the topic so that I will be able to make a good argument. I chose to write my research paper on how immigration from the Dominican Republic has influenced the agricultural jobs in the United States and how that influence affects how society views them. I think that this will be a good argument for me since my family comes from the Dominican Republic. I intend on focusing my research paper to the an audience that is interested in the current immigration debate. Looking at the Purdue Owl website gave me an idea on how I will start to write my paper and how to proof read it.

  13. @Jackie O'DonnellI think that your research paper is going to be interesting and that you chose both cases that have had a lot of media coverage. I think that maybe you should just focus on either the media and crimes and not also include the violence in video games.

  14. Jackie,

I really like where your going with your paper and feel like your heading in the right direction. I really like the concept of your paper. I feel that it is true that the media influences serial killers. Some times the media actually pushes the serial killers to do the deed and push them more to kill. It makes them a celebrity and make them feel good for what their doing.

  15. I Believe my paper on the the chemical imbalances of Holmes and Bundy will be an analytical paper. I will be researching the cause of their horrid acts. What would drive such a person to kill. Could it be motivation or a chemical imbalance instilled from birth? The likely audience would be adults or researchers interested in why murder's kill. I feel the paper will be an interesting topic to research. I will have to do research on all possible reasons to ward off members of society whom would question my research.

  16. @Ben DonleyYour paper sound very interesting and would like to know how it comes together in the end. In your comment you did not reveal your desired audience I would hope as well in your paper you would be able to debunk the critics and their defenses. Your paper seems to be off to a good start.

  17. After reading the Perdue OWL reading assignment, I feel that I have a pretty good grasp on the concept of what a research paper is about. Of the two styles of research papers outlined on this site, I think I am going to use the second one which is the analytical approach. I will ask the question "How did a few main members of the Freedom Riders affect the problem of racial segregation and has their work continued into the fight for equality today?" The thesis and argument I will provide for my research paper will be "The work of a few main members of the Freedom Riders must be put back into practice Today for a revival in the fight for racial equality."

  18. Victoria,
I like how your topic kind of honed in on your topic. I like how you have found out how to question your topic. What I think you are missing is a sort of call to action with a contemporary issue. Such as what current court case has to do with a murderous mind.

  19. I feel like with the ideas that I already have for my paper are leaning towards it being an analytical research paper. I already have the topic chosen and the method I used was to start with the ideas developed in the 2Syn paper and morph them into something arguable but also factual. The audience was given to us so that must be taken into account when I begin writing it. In my conference we discussed how to begin my research paper and what we came up with was to start with Ted Bundy and how his story was relayed.

  20. @Alicia Whisler

Alicia, It seems like you have a strong understanding of where your paper will lead. The second option looks like a good choice for your topic but I can't help but wonder if because your topic is race you could have a strong argument and use the other option?

    ReplyDelete
  21. After reading the page on Purdue Owl about research papers I feel that I have a better understanding on what I have to accomplish with this paper. I feel like I am leaning towards the second choice of an analytical paper and asking a question but I am not completely sure. Both the argumentative and the analytical have pros and cons and that is something that I have to look at before I start writing my paper. I do know that my paper is focusing on my thesis which talks about how over the years the criminals are beating out the police officers. Also that criminals are becoming smarter and having new ways of protecting themselves and not getting caught.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Alicia Whisler
I think that the analytical approach is the best way to go with this paper and that is what I will most likely do for my paper as well. I think that your thesis and question work well and that you have a great understanding of what you are going to talk about in your paper.

  23. After reading the purdue Owl site and looking at the information involving the two major types of research papers, I would say that my paper is argumentative. I have decided that I am going to revolve my research paper around the various ways our culture has changed and how the change in culture has influenced the ways in which people then view dieting. I am going to argue the point that our society often gives very mixed messages about dieting.
My paper will be broken up into two main focal points that are based on how advertisement affects the ways people think about dieting. The first will be to highlight the ways our society promotes people to be very thin and look like models. The second will be the ways in which society advertises foods and promotes people to eat foods that are not good for a person’s health. My paper will be argumentative because in it I will argue that it is hard as a teenager in today’s society to accomplish a healthy lifestyle.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Rachel
I think that your paper could easily go either way. If you would choose to take the argumentative type of research paper you could argue that criminals have gotten smarter in the ways they commit crimes and that they are starting to escape getting in trouble with the cops. However, argumentative or analytical would work for your topic, and I think either will make for an interesting research paper.

  25. After reading the PurdueOWL page, I think I have a clearer view on my research paper. I have my topic of sports already, but that is too general so I will pick the effect of money in sports. I thought that writing a draft came while doing research but the page pointed out that drafting comes only after all research is done. As far as the type of paper, I will probably be doing an argumentitive paper for the side of money effecting sports negatively. I think that arguing my view, along with many sources views is the best way to get my point across

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Jackie O'Donnell I am really interested to see what kind of things you discuss solely because I know that the media's job is to make the news interesting. That said, they can create pressure out of thin air on jurors and unintentionally push cases one way or another. It seems like the more media a case gets the less likely the cases will end in a conviction. I think you should come up with some very provocative witness accounts and professional opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  27. After reading the OWL page, I think that I am writing an analytical paper because I will be discussing the pro's and con's of political lobbying. I will use an audience that does not know a lot about political lobbying. I will use examples for both the pro and con sides to show political lobbying in a positive and negative way. I will even discuss reasons why political lobbying should be watched, and even how it should be watched.

  28. For my topic i am going to be writing a argumentative paper. I am focusing around the idea on whether not college athletes should be paid for their services to the school they play for. I believe they have earned some form of compensation. I talk about different ways of paying the players that will benefit them in many other ways. One specific way is by giving them an education so they are better prepared for a possible career as an athlete and make an informed decision. Since athletic careers are very short to begin with it is important for players to have back up plans. Overall my paper will be about why I think we should pay players for their services and what are some of the ways we can do so.

  29. @CLucas An analytical paper based on politics is a very solid paper Chris. One thing i think would be a great addition to your paper is talking about what different kinds of people think about political lobbying since there are people who are more experience in politics and others who are not.

Andrew, you are heading in the right direction. Do you know what your main audience is? You have a good topic to work with, and using college level sports is a great idea. I would suggest possibly giving the college's stand point on it, and how they give the players scholarships.

  31. After reading Purdue Owl, not only did I discover that a lot of people experience stress and that writing takes a great deal of practice, but it also showed me how what to include in a sufficient research paper. It mentions how I will include the genre first. My genre will be exploring a definition because I will be tying in how the Freedom Riders struggle towards racial equality affected education for black. My topic I would include would be education. My audience would be people who do not look at racial equality in the same way as the Freedom Riders do. Lastly, I will begin by making and introduction and a thesis which really gets my point across and explains my argument.

  32. @Kaila Ober
I really like that you stated how you are going to focus on a specific topic and explain it in a lot of detail. Who is your audience for this paper? I would say that you should maybe focus on teenagers and how their health is affected. Overall, I would really like to read your paper and see how you would change culture in the course of dieting.

  33. I'm pretty sure my research paper is also an argumentative paper. I'm focusing on how students are motivated and arguing my thesis. For some reason, it seems the more time we have, or at least in my opinion, the lazier and laid back we are. We put things off and don't try our hardest because there isn't a hard work attitude because things go smoothly and at a slower pace because we know we have plenty of time to do it. I will have to do plenty of psychological research to see what goes through peoples' heads. This will be difficult but i think it will make an interesting research paper.

  34. @Andrew Wheeler

I said it before and I'll say it again. I'm excited for your paper. This is becoming a debated topic as college sports gain support and recognition. Andrew, if I were you, I think to target a university's/college's administration would be the best way to make way for this particular issue. Write to people who would hold authority in sports programs or college administrations. It may even help to write to an audience that pays to watch the athletes. Good luck with your paper!

  35. For my research paper, I will be writing an argumentative paper. I will be arguing when certain technologies should be combined and when it is a bad time to combine them. I believe, for the most part, it is best to keep technology separated because small specific inventions are more efficient than one invention that can do multiple things less efficiently. But I also talk about good ideas for combining technology. Some combinations work while others do not. What I want for readers to gain from my paper is the knowledge of what kind of technologies they should buy.

  36. Paige I like how you plan on getting the audiences right from the beginning in the introduction and thesis. I also think you have a good main idea for your paper, which is the racial equality for black people. Do you know who your main target audience is though? I would make it more clear in your paper.@Paige

  37. I thought that the Purdue OWL did a great job in revealing the purposes and differences between argumentative and analytical genre. I feel that my research paper topic is going in the direction of being argumentative. This is because I believe that from reading Enrique's Journey my sympathy for them will influence my opinion to the point that I would find ways to argue that they are more beneficial to our society than harmful. My research paper will cover wether or not illegal immigrants are to blame for our country's economic struggles by analyzing the effects scenarios where employers pay their workers who are illegal immigrants less than minimum wage.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I can totally relate to what the Purdue OWL wrote about procrastinating the paper because you didn't know what to do or how to go about it. It can sometimes be a little intimidating. The paper gives four solid points on how to begin and create a successful paper. I feel that using this webpage can be a great help to writing my research paper. It can help me through pretty much all of the steps. My research paper will argue that Steve Jobs can be considered a modern day Thomas Edison. I will have to do research on both Jobs and Edison to make comparisons to prove my point.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @WFisher...

I think we will have similar structures of our research papers because we are both starting from the argument side of things. I think that it will be very hard to argue that illegal immigrants are more beneficial than a burden to society though. Not to many people will agree with you on that, so maybe you should argue it the other way around? Its just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @CLucas
Well I myself am definably in your targeted audience because I have no idea what political lobbying is. At some point you may have to narrow your topic down more because I feel that what you have now is very similar to what I thought my topic was going to be before I noticed that it was too broad.

  41. I found a lot of helpful information on the Purdue OWL page about research papers. My paper is about privacy and technology, specifically facebook and some other online services. My initial thesis was just that people use these things every day without thinking about the privacy consequences of their actions, but after meeting with Dr. Archibald I narrowed it to focus mainly on Facebook. My tentative thesis at this point is that as users of technology we must be responsible for our own privacy online and educate ourselves because Facebook is not making a good faith effort to protect the personal information we share with them; the only time they do anything about it is when they receive extensive criticism and consumers make an issue of it. With this new thesis my paper falls under the "argumentative" type. One thing I read on the OWL page that I found informative was that "the intent [of the paper is to] persuade [your] audience that [your] particular interpretation of the situation is viable". Another thing I must keep in mind with the argumentative type of paper is to consider the likely counter-arguments that a reader might have and then address them; this way the reader can see that I've considered the other angles and still reach the same conclusion. In my case these arguments could be "I don't care about privacy" or "I don't have anything to hide" or "Facebook already protects my information" and so on. The last idea I found important was the purpose of the research paper, which is "to add something new to the academic community". Keeping this in mind will help me to decide what sort of information to include. Finally, I must say that I agree with their statement at the beginning of the webpage that research papers can seem very daunting to students!

  42. @Sammy Testa I agree with you on this! I have never written a, I feel maybe not the right idea, a persuasive research paper! I’m not even sure where on earth to start! I’m a little nervous about this paper. I am not the best writer in the world. I am not 100% sure on what is being looked for either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Darren Kushto
I think your paper will be really interesting to see what aspects you look at for and against combining technologies and when it's a good thing and when it's not. One comment I have is to make sure to include the likely counter arguments you would come up against and how you would respond to them. For instance, "it's more convenient to have one item that can do multiple things", or "computers can do many things and they are one of the best technologies we have (same with smartphones)", and "it's usually cheaper to have one more universal thing than multiple more specific things". Addressing those types of objections would be my main suggestion. Anyway I'd definitely like to read your paper when you're finished!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I looked through the links on the OWL website, I am almost certain that my research paper is going to be an argument research paper but I feel there are going to be some points in the paper where I will be making persuasion. My topic is Women’s issues , but narrowing that down I am doing the differences between the 3rd wave and the second wave and how they differ from one another and which one is more correct and which one has the more “correct” idea and is focused on the more important issues that need to be taken care of.

    ReplyDelete
  45. After reading the OWL I think that my paper would be considered an analytical paper. The reason I feel this way is because for my paper I am going to go into a comparative direction. I want to connect all three papers together so it would be past, present, and future. I am going to choose a situation where two people grow up in the same "neighborhood". In the situation one goes off and does something with their life and the other goes to jail. I am going to analyze the two different situations. I am going to see why one person could pursue a good path, and the other person pursues a bad path. Especially considering that they both grow up in the same neighborhood.

  46. @Bobby Hershey I think you have a great idea to your paper. It is a great argument to think about. I agree more to your side it is way easier to procrastinate if you do not have much going on. However, the weeks when we have a lot of tests and papers due it keeps us much more focused. We know that if we do not do things in a timely matter we will ultimately run out of time.

    ReplyDelete
  47. In my research paper I will write a comparison in my thesis between ideas in the usage of the "n" word. I tried to pick a topic that will allow me to have a strong opinion in the topic so that I will be able to make a good argument. I chose to write my research paper on how the "n" word is abused in current society, I went to a school where less than 1/3 of the graduating class was white. I think that People today take the past for granted and dont respect what the value of those that managed to casting off the "n" word in the past. I intend on focusing my research paper to the an audience that is interested in the Racism and to help them understand that anyone can be racist and what it exactly means. Looking at the Purdue Owl website gave me an idea on how I will start to write my paper and how to proof read it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Darren Kushto

Its is a good thing to narrow your topic a bit and make it more specific to what your talking about. It will be a good idea to talk in your paper about the uses of the technologies and not just how they were good or bad.
